It’s summer time in the Black Hills! This summer, take a ‘stay-cation’ and enjoy the many activities that the beautiful Black Hills have to offer. From camping and fishing to hiking and biking, the opportunities are endless. I would encourage you to make a list of the area attractions that you and your family have not yet visited and then make an effort to visit one location each weekend. Tourists are often times drawn to the main attractions like Mount Rushmore, Reptile Gardens, Bear Country, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument and the many other hot spots, but there are also lots of other fun things to do that are not always on the beaten path. Many of the activities and attractions are very budget friendly! Here are a few of my favorites:
Fort Hays Old West Club located on Highway 16 just outside of Rapid City, SD offers fun for the whole family. I loved the old west town and touring the “Dances With Wolves” film set. After spending time touring the town, enjoy the chuckwagon supper and music variety show. You will be entertained by a superb cowboy band as you enjoy your chuckwagon meal. I never miss an opportunity to take my visiting guests to this favorite of mine.
The many waterfalls in Spearfish Canyon are sure to delight from the youngest to the oldest in the family. The scenic drive through Spearfish Canyon is spectacular in itself as it winds through the hills following Spearfish Creek. There are picnic areas, hiking trails and fishing holes along with the beautiful waterfalls. Stop for lunch at the Latchstring Inn and then follow the trail behind the Inn to see Spearfish Falls. Across the street is Spearfish Canyon Lodge and just up behind the lodge is where you will find Roughlock Falls.
The whole family will enjoy the Spearfish City Park! Spearfish Creek meanders through the park offering visitors a cool place to wet their feet. Throughout the park, there are covered picnic areas, walking paths, play areas and a band shell that fills the park with music on occasions. While at the park, you won’t want to miss the historical D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery which is one of the oldest operating fish hatcheries. Kids will love to feed the fish and explore the grounds of this gorgeous historical attraction.
These are three of my favorite places to spend time. I invite you to visit the Black Hills Attractions website and create your own list of “To Do’s” for this summer. Take time to enjoy the beautiful area that we live in and while you are out and about, if you happen upon a “For Sale” sign for a property that makes your heart skip a beat, give one our RE/MAX In The Hill’s agents a call. We enjoy building relationships one sold sign at a time!
